Sudan’s ambassador to the United States, Mohamed Abdalla Idris, says his government is committed to a political process to return the country to civilian-led leadership. Idris was appointed ambassador after a 2021 military takeover, which ended a transitional administration. Idris tells VOA’s Nabeel Biajo that once the conflict between the military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) ends, negotiations toward a democratic transition will resume. He says the government of Gen. Abdel-Fattah al-Burhan, head of Sudan’s Sovereign Council, enjoys full legitimacy and that a recent U.S.-brokered ceasefire between his forces and the paramilitary forces seems to be holding.
