The Government of National Unity in South Sudan has announced its efforts to unify the different forces in the country into a national army, aiming to prevent a resurgence of violence leading up to the upcoming general elections next year. According to the minister of peacebuilding, the parties involved in the 2018 peace agreement are currently screening and integrating the forces, with the objective of eliminating any "negative elements" that could hinder a transparent and impartial election process in December 2024.
