South Africa’s Ramaphosa Announces BRICS Expansion

South African president and chairperson of the 2023 BRICS Summit, Cyril Ramaphosa, Thursday announced that the five member bloc, reached a “consensus on the first phase” of expanding the body, adding that six states, Argentina, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates, received invites for membership that would commence on Jan. 1, 2024.
