Somali Research Group Validates Corruption Reports

A Somalia-based security research and analysis organization says bribery and corruption are deeply rooted within various regions of the country. The Hiraal Institute has just published the results of a “comprehensive telephone survey” it says it conducted between December 22nd 2022 and January 12th 2023 involving a randomly selected sample of 1,037 people. A Transparency International Corruption Perception Index released earlier this year ranked Somalia and South Sudan as the most corrupt countries in the world. Mohamed Mubarak, chairman of Hiraal Institute, says Somali security forces were implicated in about 44 percent of the bribery cases. Mubarak tells Daybreak Africa host James Butty, the group undertook the survey to help evaluate the Somali government’s anti-corruption policies.
