Senegal’s opposition leader Ousmane Sonko is expected in court Monday to answer to fresh charges brought against him over the weekend. Authorities charged Sonko on Saturday with plotting an insurrection and criminal conspiracy. Sonko was given a two-month suspended prison sentence in June for libel. He was chosen this month as his party’s candidate in the 2024 presidential election. Nafissa Dia, a member of Sonko’s Patriots of Senegal for Work, Ethics and Fraternity party (PASTEF), tells VOA’s James Butty, the authorities are doing everything to deny Sonko the right to contest the 2024 elections.
