A security analyst says the choice by the African Union Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS) to reduce its troops is the right decision because security in Somalia has improved recently. ATMIS said Wednesday the draw-down was in fulfillment of a UN resolution to withdraw about 2,000 troops by June 30. Mohamed Mubarak is chairman of Hiraal Institute, a security research and analysis organization for the Horn of Africa. He is also one of the authors of a recent report – “The Dangers of Prematurely Lifting the Somali Arms Embargo.” He tells Daybreak Africa host James Butty, the Somali government would have fallen in its early days had it not been for the presence of ATMIS.
