Nigerian football authorities and players of the women’s national team took to social media to express their joy after the win over Australia’s Matildas.
A tweet posted on the Super Falcons X, formerly known as Twitter, account highlighting the team’s excitement to secure their first three points at the World Cup.
The tweet was followed by a video of the West African team singing and dancing to the song "Lonely at the Top" by multi-award winning Afrobeats artist Asake, as they celebrated their heightened chances of progressing to the knockout stages.
Nigeria’s head coach Randy Waldrum said the Super Falcons were united and in a celebratory mood.
"I think they’re still singing and dancing right now. I can’t get in there and get a word in edge-wise," Waldrum said speaking outside the team's locker room at Brisbane's Lang Park.
Waldrum expressed confidence the team would win more.
"So many people didn’t believe in me, didn’t believe in the team. The one thing we’ve done is talk about believing in one another," he said.
The West African team now occupies first place in Group B, with four points, and needs to either win or draw during their July 31 match against Ireland — which is out of contention in the tournament after losing to Australia and Canada.
Australia currently occupies third place and must win their final game against Olympic champions Canada to make it to the Round of 16.
Tony Gustavsson, the Matildas head coach, said his team played well against Nigeria.
"If the performance was poor I'd say it was, but the performance wasn't poor," said Gustavsson, adding, "you look at the stats, we should walk off the field as winners of this game."
