MAPUTO - Mozambican President Filipe Nyusi said on Wednesday the conditions were right for French energy giant TotalEnergies to restart a major gas project after the scheme was halted following a 2021 jihadist attack.

The "environment" in Cabo Delgado province has improved for "the company to resume activity at any time," Nyusi told a mining and energy conference in Maputo.

TotalEnergies paused its $20 billion LNG project two years ago after a deadly raid on Palma, a coastal town and gas hub.

Mozamique's northernmost province, Cabo Delgado is struggling with an insurgency waged by militants linked to the Islamic State group.

The five-year-old campaign has claimed at least 4,683 lives, nearly half of them civilians, and forced around a million people to flee their homes.

TotalEnergies' CEO Patrick Pouyanne paid a visit to Mozambique in February to discuss conditions for a possible restart.
