A judge in Malawi has charged opposition leader Patricia Kaliati with conspiracy to murder President Lazarus Chakwera. Kaliati is the Secretary General of the United Transformation Movement (UTM), the party of the late Vice President Saulos Chilima who died in June in a plane crash. She was arrested and jailed last week without charge. UTM spokesperson Felix Njawala tells VOA’s James Butty, that the judge also granted Kaliati bail with stern conditions, including a cash bond of 1 million kwacha (about $500) and the surrender of her passport.
