South Sudan's president, Salva Kiir, has officially taken on the role of leader for the East African Community, a regional economic bloc. This announcement was made Friday in Arusha, Tanzania during the 23rd ordinary East African Community Heads of State Summit. Kiir takes charge amid regional peace and security challenges.
