Three years ago, TUKO, Kenya’s largest online news website, identified Kigali, Rwanda’s capital, as the cleanest city in Africa. Windhoek, Namibia, Accra, Ghana, and Gaborone, Botswana, came second, third and fourth. Solange Muhirwa, Rwanda’s Chief Urban Planner, says Kigali chose to be the cleanest city in Africa, and that contrary to popular opinion, clean cities are not limited to rich or developed countries alone. Muhirwa tells VOA’s James Butty, being the “cleanest city” in Africa has become a culture for Rwandans.
