Kenyan President William Ruto has officially announced a visa-free policy for people traveling to Kenya beginning January 2024. Speaking Tuesday to mark his country’s 60th independence anniversary, Ruto said the policy would relieve travelers of the burden of manually applying for visas. Instead, he said those entering Kenya would be issued an electronic travel authorization. Joseph Kioko, a Kenyan political analyst, tells VOA’s James Butty, President Ruto’s announcement is long overdue because Africans with their linguistic connections do not need visas to travel from one country to another.
