Fight Against Malaria in Africa ‘Remains Precarious’

In 2021, 247 million people suffered from malaria, an increase of 2 million cases from 2020, according to the World Health Organization’s World Malaria Report released last month. Experts say the increase in infection and mortality rates are partly attributable to the COVID-19 pandemic in addition to the threats of drug and insecticide resistance and the growing funding gap. Africa 54 health correspondent Linord Moudou spoke with Dr. Corine Karema, interim CEO of the RBM Partnership to End Malaria, about challenges in sub-Saharan Africa and the pressing needs in the fight against malaria.
