In Eswatini, the pro-democracy Multi-Stakeholders Forum has been commemorating the anniversary of the assassination of their late leader – Thulani Maseko. Maseko, the then chair of the Forum and a human rights lawyer, was killed in his home on January 21, 2023. Sicelo Mngomezulu, new Chairperson of the Muti-stakeholders Forum, tells VOA’s James Butty, the group commemorated the anniversary of the killing by dedicating a tombstone in his memory. He says the group wants the UN or SADC to take the lead in investigating Maseko’s assassination. Eswatini government spokesperson Alpheous Nxumalo says government did not murder Maseko but rather he was killed by infighting within the pro-democracy movement. He says the investigation continues.
