The Court of Justice of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) will decide next week whether Senegalese opposition politician Ousmane Sonko’s name should restored to the electoral registry for the February 2024 presidential elections. Sonko’s name was removed after being found guilty of libel. A judge in southern Senegal ordered his reinstatement, but the interior ministry refused to issue him the forms to file his candidacy because the government has appealed. Senegalese political analyst Ibrahima Kane tells VOA’s James Butty, Sonko could go to the ECOWAS court as one way of making sure the Senegalese judiciary is not being biased.
