Two Darfur-based armed movements, which were previously observing from the sidelines of Sudan's conflict between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, have now chosen to actively engage in combat to prevent atrocities against civilians in Darfur. In an exclusive interview, VOA's Nabeel Biajo speaks with Darfur governor Minni Minnawi, who is also the leader of one of these armed groups, the Sudan Liberation Movement/Army, to discuss the implications of this decision and its potential impact on the ongoing seven-month-long conflict in Sudan.
