CAR Awaits Result of Constitutional Referendum

Central African Republic voters are awaiting results from Sunday’s constitutional referendum. The proposed new constitution, if passed, would eliminate the two-term limit and extend the presidential term from five to seven years, which means President Faustin-Archange Touadera or any president could stay in power longer. The opposition had called for a boycott of the vote because if passed, it would bring about authoritarian rule. The Central African Republic diaspora voted at their country’s embassy here in Washington, D.C. Martial Mokounou is one of the coordinators and tells VOA’s James Butty, the process went well, and some voters want a new constitution.
