Biochar is a mixture of charcoal that has been used for years to enrich soil. However, research on its properties and potential benefits have recently gained the attention of foresters and agricultural producers because it helps reduce gas emissions and enhances crop yields. Chris Macaloo, regional director for East Africa of an NGO called World Neighbors, tells VOA’s Carol Van Dam that he and other staffers are teaching African farmers how to make biochar.
