A Somali journalist says the fight against al-Shabab by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud can be described as one step forward, one step back. Reuters quoted the president Tuesday as saying that his country has one year to expel al- Shabab from the country. Somalia has been fighting against the rebel group since 2006. President Mohamud said in August he wanted to eliminate it by early next year. Abdalle Ahmed-Mumin, secretary general of the Somali Journalists Syndicate, an umbrella organization for the country’s media, tells VOA’s James Butty, the major issue is the fragmentation of the Somali security forces along clan lines.
