As Pope Francis began a six-day visit to the Democratic Republic of Congo and South Sudan on Tuesday, Amnesty International urged the head of the Catholic Church to publicly call on the two countries’ leaders to end impunity for crimes under international law and take steps to achieve justice and accountability for conflict-related abuses. Jean-Mobert Senga, an Amnesty International researcher based in Nairobi, Kenya, told VOA’s Nabeel Biajo that the pope is in a unique position to urge Congolese and South Sudanese leaders to address rights abuses in their respective countries.
