As the 2024 United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) continues in Baku, Amnesty International is urging wealthy nations to make significant financial commitments to support communities in sub-Saharan Africa suffering from climate change impacts. Nciko wa Nciko, Amnesty’s Climate Justice Researcher, notes that wealthy countries have so far pledged less than $700 million of the $400 billion expected by lower-income nations to combat the climate crisis.
