US Military Forces on Standby for Sudan Evacuation

U.S. officials Thursday said they have military forces on standby near Sudan with the mandate of evacuating their embassy personnel who are stuck amid fighting between the Sudan Armed Forces and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Washington’s announcement came as calls heightened for a cease-fire in the northeast African nation by Secretary of State Antony Blinken, the United Nation’s Secretary-General Antonio Guterres, and other world leaders, a call so far ignored by the combatants.
