A British national was shot and killed in Juba this week, said government officials and the aid organization for which the slain man worked.
Presidential spokesman Ateny Wek Ateny said the Briton, whom he identified only as Michael, was killed on Tuesday “when he was entering a compound in which he was working.”
The Carter Center said the Briton, whom it did not name, worked for the NGO and was shot and killed at the Carter Center office compound in Juba on Tuesday. The Carter Center has worked in South Sudan for more than 25 years, trying to resolve civil strife, increase crop production, and eradicate devastating neglected diseases.
"Carter Center founders, former U.S. President Jimmy Carter, and his wife, Rosalynn, as well as the staff of The Carter Center, extend their deep condolences to the friends and family of the consultant, who worked closely as part of our team," the NGO said in a statement.
The British Foreign Office has confirmed that a British national was killed in South Sudan, but did not identify the victim.
Ateny said police have arrested one suspect in the killing but declined to go into detail.
