The Nigerian government and the country’s labor unions have agreed on a N70, 000 (about $50) a month pay raise. The minimum wage was originally 30,000 naira. Labor staged a series of nationwide strikes last year and early this year to demand a new rate and force the government to act on the high cost of living. The Nigeria Vanguard publication says the new wage agreement was reached at a meeting between President Bola Tinubu and labor leaders on Thursday. Emmanuel Ugboaja, secretary general of the Nigeria Labor Congress, tells VOA’s James Butty, that while labor did not get everything it had wanted, it is satisfied with the agreement.
