The celebration is common in Nigeria but prohibited by law. The central bank says "any form of defacement of the currency is a form of ridicule on the nation" that can be punished with imprisonment or a fine.

Nigeria's Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said it had "launched an investigation against Idris Okuneye, a.k.a Bobrisky, for throwing bank notes."
It cited a "video report of spraying and flaunting wads of new Naira notes" at the film premiere in Lagos last month.
The social media star was interrogated at the EFCC offices in Lagos and would "soon be charged to court upon conclusion of investigations," the EFCC said.
Nigerian actress Oluwadarasimi Omoseyin was sentenced to six months in prison in February after she was filmed spraying and stepping on banknotes.
