Paris Saint-Germain and Morocco defender Achraf Hakimi has been charged with rape, French prosecutors told AFP on Friday.

Hakimi, 24, was questioned by prosecutors Thursday in connection with accusations from a 24-year-old woman, and subsequently charged with sexual asssault.

The Madrid-born player, who was a key part of Morocco's surprise run to the semi-finals of the World Cup in Qatar last year, was seen at PSG training on Friday morning.

Hakimi took part at the FIFA Best awards on February 27, and also took part in the FIFPRO World XI for 2022 due to his performance in the FIFA World Cup 2022 as part of Morocco's strong Atlas Lions team.

Paris Saint-Germain "gives its support" to Achraf Hakimi after the Moroccan international defender was charged, a spokesman for the club said on Friday.

The spokesman also said Qatari-owned PSG "places its trust in the justice system" after Hakimi was charged following accusations made by a 24-year-old woman who cannot be identified.
